Artist Name: Akon
Category: R & B
Country: United States
Released Year: 2005
Description:
Trouble is the debut album by the ex-con Senegalese-American hip hop and R&B
singer Akon, released in 2004. The album contains Akon's first worldwide hit
single, "Lonely". The deluxe edition was released in 2005 and contains a second
disc with 10 bonus tracks. Akon broke out with "Locked Up," a gloomy but
thrilling paranoiac tail about drug running and jail time. Placed over a
fittingly dramatic production worthy of 50 Cent, with a clamping beat, simple
piano figure, and frightening slams of prison bars, the single set Trouble up to
be a major success.
Unfortunately, no other song on the album is nearly as gripping. The club tracks
fall flat, most of the soul-searching moments feel forced, and the harder and
more sexual tracks tend to be more silly than alluring. At its best, Trouble
places you in Akon's turbulent world. At its worst, which is often, the album is
excessively tedious. The release of "Locked Up" propelled Akon to fame. He has
since, either solo or as a feature, been topping the charts regularly. The album
performed much better in the United Kingdom where it peaked at #1 on the UK
Album Chart. Despite peaking low at #18, it held on, and has reached platinum
status in the United States with 1.6 million sales.
